Combating Familiarity: Exploring the motif of the Prodigal Calcuttan in Nabaneeta Dev Sen's 'Return of the Dead'

Image
"Poetry is like war", Dev Sen wrote, "a war with oneself"- an intensely personal engagement, the yield of which ruthlessly exploits and inhabits the poetics of vulnerability in trying to accommodate the overt rawness of the emotions that Dev Sen sought space for in her lifelong creative undertaking. The poetry of Nabaneeta Dev Sen embodies a curious blend of emotions, the multifariousness of which offered to the poet, and subsequently the reader, a chance to explore and identify an abundance of thematic underpinnings.  It was through poetry, the unfailing coherence of her words, and the brutal honesty that she resorted to, that Nabaneeta sought to confront and articulate pieces of her life at junctures of turmoil and dissonance. In the light of her failing marriage with economist Amartya Sen, returning to Calcutta in 1974 as a single mother of two, Nabaneeta inadvertently sparked significant curiosity.  “When Ma came back as a young mother with two kids and a marria...

And You Say You Never Pirated Music

Image
Long before Spotify began bombarding us with its corny, annoying ads, consumption of music was supplemented by the many music piracy sites, many of which no longer exist.  Just the other day, I was decluttering an old, 8GB memory card when I came across the 'My Music' folder. Opening it felt like being greeted with the same feeling of ecstasy that hits you when you discover an old DVD from a pile of dusty old souvenirs. I gladly dived into its wistful warmth, scrolling through the tons of tracks in the folder, downloaded from various websites (some with rather strange names), spanning across different genres, artists, and of course, file sizes.  The lack of interminable internet availability back in middle school meant that I had to consistently stock up on offline downloads for those midnight jamming sessions on my old Nokia Lumia.  Y outube to Mp3 was a hot favorite. Often long minutes of searching (in vain) for the  right  download button on mp3 piracy sites ...

Detachment // August Prompt

With a sigh, Ira held out a mittened hand to grab 'The Sounds of India ' from the corner of the third shelf- a vintage, moth-eaten affair sandwiched between 'Call of the Valley' and 'Passages'. Back in Philadelphia, on those crisp winter evenings, Mama would tempt her with her homemade stews, as she would wait patiently, straining her ears for the sound of the leaves in the garden crunching under the weight of her father's heavy boots. As soon as he had tossed his jacket in the direction of the sofa, he would place a record on the turntable by the window before proceeding to amuse Ira with bizarre tales from his day at work. 'In New York' used to be a winter favorite. The quiet, contemplative notes of Raag Marwa from the 1968 album always blended in well with the fresh cup of after-dinner coffee.  Ira stepped back and ran her eyes over the rows of old Indian classical records hastily cramped together in the corner of the dark, musty second-hand vin...

A Summer in Calcutta

Image
S he had treated herself to the Epiphone Black Beauty with her meager savings that summer, from a music store in Piccadilly. And not many weeks after the decidedly successful purchase, she boarded a flight to Calcutta and reached home, greeting me with an all-too-familiar toothy smile when she spotted me waiting at the pickup area of the airport.  She lived in the 1990s and loved the Beatles of the 1960s. One could hardly miss the sight of the the tall freckled blondie, walking briskly down Beadon Street, sporting those scarves and headbands popularized in America during the 1960s counterculture. I was working as a journalist for the Herald then, and the better part of my weekends were spent scouring the city with a camera and notebook in search of credible content. She would accompany me, often taking the trouble to drive me around the city in her tumbledown Maruti Gypsy, with me shouting directions above the music of Ray Charles blaring on the stereo. We used t...
